Description

The original Compton design and its pearwood textile printing blocks form part of the William Morris Gallery’s collection. Printed by hand at William Morris’s Merton Abbey workshop in South West London, the design showcases the traditional craftsmanship of wooden block printing. Each pattern was first transferred onto pearwood using tracing paper, with William Morris himself overseeing the accuracy before carving began. In this Sienna colourway, a rich blend of warm terracottas, soft blush tones and creamy neutrals brings a sense of depth and warmth to the flowing botanical forms. Originally created for Compton Hall in Wolverhampton, home of brewer and art collector Laurence Hodson, the design reflects William Morris’s vision to enrich interiors with colour and pattern while valuing the skill of the maker. He championed the use of harmonious natural dyes over the harsh synthetic alternatives common in Victorian times. Produced on durable non-woven paper, this wallpaper offers a beautifully refined look for your home.
